Question Blue Fooling my ISPs traffic control

My ISP allows me a 15GB monthly quota but allow unlimited traffic between the hours of 1am-7am every night. This is a good deal in my country as unlimited plans just do not exist. They call the 1am-7am window the 'off peak' hours but in reality, it is their mostly heavily used time of day. Torrents and bulk download sites (ie rapidshare, megaupload) are scheduled by everyone. The ISPs solution to this has been to do what they call, 'traffic shaping' or 'prioritization'. Torrents and bulk download sites, or anything that matches a pattern like these get a low priority. It's becoming so bad now that I'm barely able to pull down 1GB in this 6 hour window!

Some guys say they can still get 10+ GB a night through private trackers or via FTP. I don't have access to any of those things so I'm wondering if anyone here has any suggestions.

Something I thought may work was to sign up to a web host somewhere offshore and run a remote upload script on the host. Then I could schedule the FTP to download them in the 1am-7am window. Some guys say this won't work, some guys have said it might if it was within a VPN. Adding the VPN is a bit of a deterrent for me to try because of the extra complexity...

Any other ideas?

My thanks in advance.

If you are saying that you would get better speeds, and more downloaded from a Private Server and you know this for a fact as you tested it out (you should test it out if you have not done so yet to see if it is true ). On the VPN thing I am not sure what to say as I haven't personally set one up.

If you are fine with the time of setting it up, writing the scripts and paying for it all, I see no reason why you shouldn't give it a shot

@Jay, what a random post lol.

Hi Maclover,

Yeah, well I haven't tested it out. I was hoping to get some response in the form of yay or nay before putting up the cost and the effort. I am happy to do the work, if it is a possible solution. As it stands at the moment, I can't even get one 720p show in a 6 hour run during my 'off peak' traffic. I find that appalling.

You could rent a server somewhere that you can remote into download your stuff there and setup a private FTP server for yourself and download from there. You will need to install one that runs SSL so that the traffic is encrypted.
You will want to use FTPRUSH to download.

BTW are you using jdownloader to dl off RS or another dl manager of so have you tried adding more threads like 4 simultaneous instead of just say 2 maybe push it to 8-12.

Oh and the reason they consider 1-7am offpeak is because thats when most people are sleeping and most all business are closed.
They don't want the leeching to get in the way of the majority of the peoples needs.

This sorta reminds me of a problem I had with my last isp. I had been with them for over 5 years and had a unlimited account with them even though they do not offer that anymore. However the service was so heavily throttled I ended up having to let them go and switched to a cable isp that has a limit that I pay for 100$ 190gb month but is unfettered and I can get 1280k off most services/sites

Good post man, thanks. I see server solutions that offer unlimited bandwidth and storage with FTP access for less than 10 USD/month. I'm not sure if they support sftp, but I will look into that. Thanks. So you reckon this idea should work?

I use IDM do download and have the number of connections maxed at 16 per download. I wish it was as simple as just increasing my connection number it is not, sadly. I run 5 downloads in parallel and 16 connections per download but the speeds do not improve over running a single download with 16 connections.

190GB a month would be sweet for 100$. Internet is expensive here and I pay $60 per month for this sucky plan When I download in the 'peak' time of day, I generally max my line rate of 13mb, but I only get 15GB a month with this plan at $1 per extra GB!

Well only way to know would be for you to test dl off a ssl encrypted FTP. And see what kind of speeds you can get.

I know you don't have any priv sites atm but you could try on some public ftp's that allow ssl or non. I am guessing you will need the ssl. Sites that offer linux distros might be a good place to test.

Using ssl priv ftp's was fine for my on my old isp up until the last few months I was on them because then they started to throttle all encrypted connections as well and that was the last straw for me.

Hopefully that does not happen to yours.

Default Re: Fooling my ISPs traffic control

I would say, get a seedbox/shell account/VPS or equivalent, mine costs me £10 p/m and it has a minimum of 25Mbps Up and Down with a max of 100Mbps Up and Down, it downloads my stuff and I download from it...simple!

Also it has FTP/SFTP/HTTP/SSH and VPN access to it so I can get my downloads in a number of ways.

Also its great if you are part of a private torrent site where you need to keep a healthy ratio, I download a torrent on my VPS and leave it seeding until I have a 10:1 upload ratio and then drop it, works a treat (especially as where I live, the country has a flat upload rate that is the same of every ISP of 0.5-0.75 Mbps so having a 25Mbps minimum box is awesome!)

EDIT: PM me if you want me to refer you to my provider, also if you wanted we could set up a test where you download a file from my box and test your speed to make sure its worth you $$$)
