LOOK! carefully to the forehead of Chris Pine, you'll see some blocks in the 864p image, but in the 900p his face looks natural.

 

Thanks guys. I hate taking screens, a lot of the time they don't do the encode justice so I try to be careful not to put too much weight into that when judging encodes. I usually take a few dozen and pick out the best I see. So you can't judge it solely by that, but keep in mind that I used a higher bitrate (per pixel) and a better source. I'm trying to stick to 4.37 GB and DTS, occasionally 640 kbps AC3 if there's just no way to avoid it without breaking DVD5. My hope is to produce something that's of a lower size and higher overall quality than 720p scene rips (I've compared all the 864p+ encodes I've done so far to larger scene releases and they crush them).

I'm curious at the color difference between the two, must depend on the player you take screens with. This isn't the same frame, just for color comparison. Here's the BD vs mine using KMP. I might start using KMP over VLC for screens since it seems that, along with the color saturation, VLC sometimes produces background artifacts in screens that don't actually exist (IE: last screen of george kirk on the left beside his shoulder, good screenshot but background artifacts keep popping up when I try to screenshot high action -- must be VLC's mexican internal codec). It also does weird resize stretching to the screenshot while KMP stays native.
